Paper Transformations: Sea/Spiral
Bristol paper, Watercolor, glue, wire, 24 x 26 x 48 in, Winter 2024

About This Piece:
Sea/Spiral was inspired by sketches I did of shells and sea urchins. I was fascinated with the elegant spiral form that appears in many shells, which i sought to recreate with paper. The organic, curved folds in the paper were inspired by fish scales and the fluidity of water. Originally constructed in four modules, the piece best comes together when hung up. It is large enough to stand in, and if I were to recreate this on a larger scale I would like to incorporate blue, green, and purple lighting and a sound piece. The paper was painted with watercolor, and if you look closely you can observe a subtle shimmer, as if the artwork itself is underwater.
